on How to Repot a Phalaenopsis Moth Orchid
is below:
Clear plastic pots are the best option to use because....
....they
allow you to see if the compost is damp
and enables you to be aware of healthy roots. Repotting needs to take place either when the pot is overfull and roots are crowded leaving no room to expand, when compost is old and broken down,or the pot is showing green algae. This will be generally every two years.
It
is also advisable to have a new inner leaf
emerging from the centre of the plant as this indicates the start of
the growing season.
Start by taking the phalaenopsis from pot and carefully remove compost from around roots. Inspect the roots.....
......and cut away any damaged or rotten roots.
After you have trimmed the roots, they will look like this. Reducing the amount of rotten roots may mean that its not necessary to move to a larger pot as your newly trimmed roots may fit snugly back into the original, cleaned pot. If the inside of your clear plastic pot is green with algae, wash and disinfect it before refilling.
Fresh compost on the left, 2 year old compost on the right. You can see how over time the compost has lost all of its structure, and has become compacted.
Quarter fill pot with compost.
Place plant in centre of the pot ...
...and continue to fill with compost....
Push compost gently around the roots...
Fill the pot with good quality orchid compost to the lowest pair of leaves.
Once you have finished adding the compost, water well with orchid fertilizer and then drain.
